Illinois workplace accident takes 2 lives

There are many things in the workplace that are known to be dangerous. For example, firefighters know that entering a burning building is a risk. However, there are many hidden hazards in a workplace that could prove dangerous, even deadly. As a result, states require employers to provide workers’ compensation benefits in case a worker is injured or killed in a workplace accident. Two Illinois families may qualify for such benefits after a fatal industrial accident took the lives of their loved ones.

At approximately 2 p.m. on a day in June, two employees of Agridyne LLC were working to clean a rail tanker car that reportedly contained a small amount of liquid. Unfortunately, carbon monoxide had apparently built up in the car. One of employees fell into the car, prompting the second employee to attempt a rescue.

Unfortunately, both succumbed to the carbon monoxide. One of the men died at the scene, while the second man died later at the hospital. The accident is currently under investigation. If the Occupational Safety and Health Administration discovers that health or safety standards were violated leading up to the fatal accident, the company could face a fine.

The shock and devastation the family of these two men are likely facing as a result of this workplace accident is likely unfathomable for those who have not experienced a similar loss. While the Illinois families are likely concerned about the financial ramifications of the accident, workers’ compensation benefits will likely cover funeral costs and lost wages, among other expenses. Many people have found, however, that experience with and knowledge of the compensation process helps ensure that they will receive all of the compensation to which they are entitled in an acceptable time frame.
