The construction of a new business is usually a good sign. It provides employment for construction workers at the time and will likely result in more jobs once the business is open. However, construction sites have dangers that could result in injury or death due to a workplace accident. For example, the demolition of an old restaurant, in order to replace it with a new one, has resulted in tragedy for one Illinois family.
In late December, a 25-year-old man and a co-worker were working to demolish a former restaurant. Unfortunately, part of the building collapsed on the two workers, and they were hit with bricks and other debris. Both men were transported to an area hospital for treatment.
Although reports indicate the first worker was wearing a helmet at the time of the collapse, he ultimately died from his injuries. The second worker only received minor injuries and is suspected to recover. The incident is currently under investigation by both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration as well as the local police department.
Because there is always some degree of risk of being injured while on the job, most states, including Illinois, require employers to provide workers’ compensation coverage in the event of a workplace accident. The benefit will generally cover medical costs, lost wages and other applicable costs of recovery. In the event of the employee’s death, such benefits usually extend to his or her family members. However, the process of obtaining compensation can sometimes be complicated and confusing. Many people have found it helpful to seek additional guidance while seeking compensation.
