Most people are aware of the fragility of human life. Despite this knowledge, the loss of a loved one in an unexpected accident always comes as a shock. There is much those grieving must deal with at such a time, but if the loss occurs at work, workers’ compensation insurance coverage may be applicable. One family in Illinois may qualify for these benefits after a man was killed in a construction accident.
The accident happened in late January. Reports indicate that a 45-year-old man was utilizing a crane while working on a residential construction building. The man was apparently approximately 60 feet in the air when he leaned into a shaft and was pinned by a descending elevator.
The man’s coworkers were able to extricate him before rescue workers were involved. Reports indicate that he was unresponsive upon their arrival. Although he was transported to the hospital for treatment, he ultimately passed away from the injuries he suffered in the accident. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has launched an investigation into the incident.
While OSHA has up to six months to determine whether any health or safety standards were violated leading up to the construction accident, the family of the deceased man may need immediate financial assistance. Because states require employers to provide workers’ compensation insurance coverage for their employees (and dependent family members in the event of a workplace fatality), the family may be able to receive some financial relief. Many others in Illinois who have found themselves in a similar situation have sought professional assistance navigating the complicated process regarding workers’ compensation claims in an attempt to ensure they are treated fairly.
